Individualized Laser Vision Correction - FDA Approved CustomVue™
Wavefront Technology
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dr.
Steven B. Siepser of the Siepser Laser Eyecare in King
of Prussia,
PA announced today that it offers the FDA approved
CustomVue individualized laser vision correction procedure,
a major breakthrough for the correction of nearsightedness
and astigmatism. The treatment signals a new era in laser
vision correction, and establishes a new standard for the
measurement and correction of the unique imperfections
in each individual’s vision. As shown in a clinical
study, this precise level of measurement and correction
potentially enables individuals to achieve vision better
than is possible with glasses and contact lenses.
CustomVue potentially enables individuals to achieve
their best possible vision. The procedure is based
on the WaveScan® technology,
originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes
to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects
in space.
VISX has adapted this technology for use in individualized
laser vision correction to treat nearsighted and astigmatic
individuals in the United States.
“
Glasses and contact lenses are limited in their ability to
correct unique imperfections in each individual’s vision,” said
Dr. Siepser. “In fact thousands of individuals have
the same prescription. With WaveScan-driven technology, we
are able to carefully measure the unique characteristics
of each individual’s vision and develop a treatment
plan tailored just for that person’s eyes.”
And now, we are able to let patients “preview” an
approximation of their potential vision before undergoing
the procedure. “Once a WaveScan measurement is taken,
I now have the option to create a unique trial lens called
a PreVue® Lens, with an individual’s unique correction
on it. This lens is then fitted into a trial frame so the
patient can preview their new, improved vision,” said
Dr. Siepser.
A clinical study showed that after one year 98 percent
of the participants achieved 20/20 or better vision,
without glasses or contact lenses, after the procedure.
Seventy
percent
of these patients had vision better than 20/20, without
glasses or contact lenses. Anyone 21 years of age
or older who wears
glasses or contact lenses for the correction of nearsightedness
and/or astigmatism may be a candidate for the procedure.
This procedure sets a new standard in the laser vision
correction industry. “I am delighted that CustomVue is now available
for my patients,” noted Dr. Siepser. “We were
so pleased with the outstanding results of the clinical study
and are delighted that we now have the ability to treat nearsighted
and astigmatic individuals using the most advanced technology
available from VISX, Incorporated.” Dr. Siepser
added.
Dr. Steven B. Siepser, M.D., FACS is certified by
the American Board of Ophthalmology, American Board
